March 1st, 2022 will mark the 150 anniversary of Yellowstone National Park. In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the world's first national park for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. The foresight and action of all those who played a role in the establishment of Yellowstone were a gift to us all.
Have you ever been to Yellowstone? If so, you know what I'm talking about when I say it is one of the most ecologically and geologically diverse areas most people will ever experience! Home to a super volcano, 10,000+ hydrothermal features (hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, and mud pots), 300 species of birds, 67 mammal species, 16 fish species, 6 reptile species, 5 amphibian species, 1,160+ plant species (3 of which are endemic - they are ONLY found in Yellowstone!), 4 mountain ranges, over 70 named peaks over 8,000 feet in elevation, 1,000+ rivers and streams (2,500 miles of running water), 600 lakes and ponds, extremophile bacteria, amazing conservation stories and innumerable memories - Yellowstone is one special place.
Yellowstone has taught us many lessons as a society about conservation and the importance of healthy ecosystems. Yellowstone also set a key precedent of setting aside land for conservation; as the first national park Yellowstone paved the way for the other 422 National Parks in the U.S. and 4,000+ National Parks across the planet. I hope you are able to visit Yellowstone this summer to celebrate the 150th Anniversary and connect with nature!
